10/28/05 --Sophomore Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) hit an astounding .577 and registered 17 kills in Long Island University’s fifth consecutive Northeast Conference win over Central Connecticut this evening at the Schwartz Center. The Blackbirds cruise to first place in the league with the triumph.

Senior Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) recorded her 18th consecutive double–double this season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Classmate Jade Gold (Jupiter, Fla.) collected 14 kills, seven blocks, and hit .417.

In game one, the Blackbirds fell behind 9-4 but their luck changed thanks to strong service from Adela Igniska. The senior served four straight points to pull LIU to within two. Both teams had sturdy service keeping the game close as LIU took the first game, 31-29, after two consecutive kills by Wagner.

The Blackbirds held CCSU to .000 hitting in the second game. Burtonsville, Md. native Alexis Reed served six uninterrupted points to take a lead they would not relinquish. LIU solidly w
on the game, 30-18.

Holding onto an 11-10 advantage, LIU reeled off four straight points – again behind the strong service of Reed – to take a 15-10 lead. The Blue Devils called time out in hopes of breaking Reed’s stride, but to no avail, as play resumed she followed with four more points. The Blackbirds never looked back, taking game three and the match 30-19.

Central Connecticut was led by Jacqui Jackson who posted 12 kills and nine digs. Brynn Good notched 29 assists and Katie Seamon tallied 10 digs.
