Volleyball Drops Two at the Mizuno Classic

8/27/05 Long Island dropped a pair of contests to open the season, falling to Sacrament State and Long Beach State in women's volleyball action on Friday at the Mizuno Invitational at The Walter Pyramid.

The Blackbirds fell 3-1 to Sacramento State in the first match. After a 30-19 and 30-26 loss in the first and second games, LIU bounced back to capture a 30-28 win in the third showing. The two teams each had 16 kills in the third game but LIU forced the Hornets to commit 10 errors.

Sac State closed out the contest forcing 11 LIU errors in the fourth game to capture a 30-17 win.

Martina Wagner paced the Blackbirds with 15 kills. Lizelle Jackson added 12.

The #24 ranked Long Beach squad swept the Blackbirds, 3-0 in the late game on Friday (30-25, 30-13, 30-27).

Wagner was the only LIU player to post double-digit kill numbers with 14. The Blackbirds were out-blocked, 14-4.
