Conference Player of the Year Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, CA)
tallied her 20th double-double of the season (23 kills, 23
digs) in leading the top-seeded Long Island University volleyball
team to a 3-1 (31-33, 32-30, 30-18, 30-21) win over the fourth-seeded
Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at the Schwartz Center
this evening.
The victory moves the Blackbirds
(23-12) into the finals of the 2005 Northeast Conference Volleyball
Championships
Sunday
at 1:00 p.m. They will face the winner of this evening’s
Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA) match.
Three other players reached double
figures in both kills and digs. LIU’s Martina Wagner
(Friedrichshafen, Germany) had 20 kills and 21 digs, while
both Jacqui Jackson
(Rancho Cucamonga,
CA) (15 kills, 14 digs) and Chantelle Bowden (Chilliwack, British
Columbia) (10 kills, 13 digs) had double-doubles for Central
Connecticut St.
The Blue Devils came out of the gates strong, taking an early
5-1 advantage in the first game. The Blackbirds strung together
six consecutive points to take the lead, 8-5. After a see-saw
battle in the thrilling game, LIU led 30-29 with a chance to
grab the win. Consecutive kills by Jackson and junior Chelsea
Magee (Mission, British Columbia) turned the game around and
pushed the Blue Devils to victory.
Game two featured another run by the Blue Devils to start the
frame, as a Jackson kill bumped their lead to 8-2. LIU fought
back, knotting the game at 25-25 on a kill from Jackson. Senior
Adela Igniska (Baia Mare, Romania) tallied three kills for the
Blackbirds en route to tying the match at one game apiece.
A strong defense in game three helped LIU capture a 30-18 win.
The Blackbirds limited CCSU to a -.029 hitting percentage, while
registering a .278 mark.
Tied at 10-10, LIU went on an 8-3 run to take control of game
four and take the match.
