11/19/05 --Northeast Conference Player of the Year Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, CA) tallied her 20th double-double of the season (23 kills, 23 digs) in leading the top-seeded Long Island University volleyball team to a 3-1 (31-33, 32-30, 30-18, 30-21) win over the fourth-seeded Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at the Schwartz Center this evening.

The victory moves the Blackbirds (23-12) into the finals of the 2005 Northeast Conference Volleyball Championships Sunday at 1:00 p.m. They will face the winner of this evening’s Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA) match.

Three other players reached double figures in both kills and digs. LIU’s Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) had 20 kills and 21 digs, while both Jacqui Jackson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) (15 kills, 14 digs) and Chantelle Bowden (Chilliwack, British Columbia) (10 kills, 13 digs) had double-doubles for Central Connecticut St.

The Blue Devils came out of the gates strong, taking an early 5-1 advantage in the first game. The Blackbirds strung together six consecutive points to take the lead, 8-5. After a see-saw battle in the thrilling game, LIU led 30-29 with a chance to grab the win. Consecutive kills by Jackson and junior Chelsea Magee (Mission, British Columbia) turned the game around and pushed the Blue Devils to victory.

Game two featured another run by the Blue Devils to start the frame, as a Jackson kill bumped their lead to 8-2. LIU fought back, knotting the game at 25-25 on a kill from Jackson. Senior Adela Igniska (Baia Mare, Romania) tallied three kills for the Blackbirds en route to tying the match at one game apiece.

A strong defense in game three helped LIU capture a 30-18 win. The Blackbirds limited CCSU to a -.029 hitting percentage, while registering a .278 mark.

Tied at 10-10, LIU went on an 8-3 run to take control of game four and take the match.
