11/4/05 -- Senior Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) posted her 18th double-double of the season (23 kills, 20 digs) as the Long Island University women’s volleyball team defeated Rhode Island 3-1 (25-30, 30-16, 30-28, 30-21) Friday evening before a lively crowd in the Schwartz Center.

URI jumped out to a four point head start (9-5) in the first contest, however the Blackbirds tied with a kill by sophomore Trevon Dyson (Rock Hill, S.C.). LIU fell behind 15-9 but two kills from Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and block by Jade Gold (Jupiter, Fla.) and Wagner brought them with in one point(16-17). The Rams once would again take the lead and the eventually game 30-25.

In the second game, Gold served the opening three points for LIU. Rhode Island pulled to 10-7 but could not take the lead. Using a stifling defense, the Blackbirds smothered the Rams’ attack throughout the match, out-hitting URI .357 to -.030, marking the fourth contest this season in which the Blackbirds have held their opponent to a negative hitting percentage.

URI battled back in game three, enjoying an early five point lead (9-4) - the largest lead of the game by either team. The third game produced five ties and three lead changes. The Blackbirds won the game, 30-28 with one of Wagner’s 18 kills for the evening.

In the final game of the night, LIU held the Rams to .048 hitting while earning .348.Game four generated seven ties with URI leading the game five times. However, after the Blackbirds tied the game at 12, they slowly pulled away, taking the game and match, 30-21.

Rachel Bello led the Rams with 14 kills and eight digs. Jillian Bekke added 11 kills and Inga Schlect chipped in 27 assists.

The Blackbirds improve to 19-11 on the season, and remain 7-0 in the Northeast Conference.

LIU hosts Temple in the Blackbird Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 5:00 p.m. The Rams will take on University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at 3:00 pm in the Schwartz Center.
