Trevon Dyson (Rock Hill, S.C.) led three Blackbirds in double-figure
kills as Long Island University opened its Northeast Conference
slate with an impressive 3-0 (30-21, 30-13, 30-25) victory
over St. Francis (Pa.) in women’s collegiate volleyball
action. The triumph improves LIU’s record to 11-11 on
the season.
Dyson had 11 kills and season-best .562 hitting percentage and
sophomore Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) notched her
13th double-double of the season (10 kills, 12 digs). Senior
Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) tallied 10 kills. The Blackbirds
tied a season-best .427 hitting percentage for the match, set
earlier this season against Columbia.
Leading the first game, 11-10,
LIU reeled off seven consecutive points to take command early.
Jackson tallied
three of the team’s
four kills during the run, as the Blackbirds hit .444 for the
game.
LIU was even more impressive in the second stanza, hitting .520
and holding SFPA to a dismal .042 percentage. The Blackbirds
limited the Red Flash offense to a .143 hitting percentage on
the afternoon.
Junior Flavia Sanches (Sorocabo, Brazil) was impressive off
the bench in the third game, dishing out 10 assists to seal the
win.
St. Francis (Pa.) was led by
Keshia Gibbs’ seven
kills and .308 hitting.
The Blackbirds continue NEC play, hosting Robert Morris at 1
p.m. on Sunday. The contest is a rematch of the 2004 NEC Tournament
championship game in which LIU upset the top-seeded Colonials
to capture the league title and an automatic berth in the NCAA
Tournament.
