8/25/06--The Long Island University women’s volleyball team (0-1) dropped its season-opening match, falling 3-2 (30-21, 26-30, 30-22, 23-30, 10-15) to Stony Brook at the Jasper Invitational. The Blackbirds were led by a pair of double-doubles, coming from Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and Svetlana Simic (Lerk, Serbia and Montenegro). Wagner racked up 23 kills and 13 digs, while Simic tallied 12 kills and 12 digs.

Long Island took the first game convincingly, but in the second frame the Seawolves kept it close the whole way, eventually winning the game by four points. Game three was similar until the Blackbirds tied it at 20 before unleashing a 10-2 run to close out the game.

The fourth game was also tight, but saw Stony Brook pull away at the end to force the deciding fifth game. The two teams battled back-and-forth to tie the game at nine, but the Seawolves outscored the Blackbirds 6-1 at the end to take the match.

Simic lead LIU with a .229 hitting percentage, while Kaitlyn Deutsch’s .333 average paced Stony Brook. The Blackbirds were outhit by the Seawolves, 69-52.

LIU returns to action at the Jasper Invitational later today against host Manhattan at 6:00 p.m.
