Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) led three Blackbirds in
double-digit kills with 26, and recorded her second double-double
of the
tournament as Long Island defeated Weber State, 3-1 (30-23,
31-29, 39-41, 30-22), in second day action of the Courtyard
by Marriott Blackbird Classic.
Setter
Ivana Vasiljevic (Brcko, Bosnia & Herzegovina) added 53
assists, and Martina Wagner also added a double-double (18
kills, 12
digs) as LIU
hit .261 for the match.
After the Blackbirds took the
first two games, the third game turned into a slugfest as both
teams had multiple chances to win. Tied at 29-29, a kill by Jackson
gave Long Island match point. After a timeout by the Wildcats,
freshman Chelsea Bair came up big for Weber
with a kill to knot the game, 30-30. Bair recorded a double-double
of her own in the match, notching 12 kills and 19 digs.
The
game would continue back and forth before two hitting errors
on Long Island gave Weber State the marathon game.
LIU came back fighting in the
fourth game. After dropping the first four points, the Blackbirds
rattled off 12 of the next 16, led by five kills and one service
ace by Wagner, to take a 12-8 lead. It was a lead LIU would
never relinquish, as they went on to a four-game victory.
In Saturday's second match, Bowling
Green swept Georgia Southern, 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-26).
The two-day tournament
concludes this afternoon as Weber State faces Bowling Green
at 3 p.m., immediately followed by Long Island versus Georgia
Southern.
