8/18/06 -Long Island University was recently selected as a 2005-2006 Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award winner by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Blackbirds were one of just 54 teams nationally to garner the academic honor.

The award is bestowed on collegiate squads who have a team grade point average of 3.4 or higher. As a team, LIU boasted a 3.55 cumulative GPA.

The Blackbirds’ achievements were not limited to the classroom in 2005. The squad captured its second straight Northeast Conference tournament title and subsequent trip to the NCAA Tournament. LIU recorded the league’s first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament last fall with a 3-0 triumph over Cornell. The Blackbirds finished the season with a 26-14 record

Long Island, the NEC preseason favorite, opens the 2006 campaign on Friday, August 25. They face Stony Book in the Jasper Invitational hosted by Manhattan College.
