Island University was recently selected as a 2005-2006 Game
Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award winner by the American Volleyball
Coaches Association. The Blackbirds were one of just 54 teams
nationally to garner the academic honor.
The award is bestowed
on collegiate squads who have a team grade point average of
3.4 or higher. As a team, LIU boasted a 3.55 cumulative GPA.
The Blackbirds’ achievements were not limited to the classroom
in 2005. The squad captured its second straight Northeast Conference
tournament title and subsequent trip to the NCAA Tournament. LIU
recorded the league’s first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament
last fall with a 3-0 triumph over Cornell. The Blackbirds finished
the season with a 26-14 record
Long Island, the NEC preseason favorite, opens the 2006 campaign
on Friday, August 25. They face Stony Book in the Jasper Invitational
hosted by Manhattan College.
