10/6/06 -- The Long Island University volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss to Seton Hall by sweeping Army 3-0 (30-11, 30-23, 30-23) at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center Friday night. Junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) led all players with 19 kills.

Long Island controlled the tempo from start, jumping out to a 13-3 lead in game one. The Blackbirds scored nine of the next 12 points to take a 16-point lead. Army fought back, but could only muster 11 points in the first frame. Game two was a bit tighter, but LIU used a four-point run to take a 19-11 advantage that the Cadets could not overcome.

Both teams started off slow in the third game. With Long Island up 17-10, the Blackbirds reeled off five straight points. After the teams exchanged serves, LIU scored five more points to take a 26-11 lead. Army would later score six points in a row to put pressure on Long Island, but the run proved to be too little too late.

The Blackbirds hit .396 for the match compared to Army’s .167. LIU held the advantage in kills, 48-33. Junior Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) registered 12 kills and hit .526 for the match. Army’s Elizabeth Lazzari had 13 kills in a losing effort.

The Blackbirds will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they open their conference slate at Quinnipiac at noon.
