11/1/06 -- The Long Island University women’s volleyball team extended its Northeast Conference unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-0 (30-9, 30-17, 30-13) win over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center on Wednesday night. The Blackbirds used a balanced attack to dispatch the Knights with four players registering at least eight kills. Junior Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) led all players with 11 kills and chipped in with three digs.

Martina Racic (Pula, Croatia) also tallied double digits in kills, with 10. The sophomore also had a game-high six digs, as did freshman Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia).

Long Island (19-10, 6-0 NEC) made easy work of the Knights in game one, setting the tone for the match. The Blackbirds did not allow Fairleigh Dickinson to register a point off its own serve. Junior Lindsey Patty (Edmond, Okla.) had a pair of long service runs that put away the Knights. With LIU leading 6-3, Patty served five times in a row to give the Blackbirds an 11-3 advantage. Then with Long Island up 22-9, Patty toed the service line eight times to close out the game. The setter finished the match with 31 assists and three aces.

The Knights (15-11, 3-3 NEC) didn’t fare much better in game two, but mustered 17 points in the loss. In the third game, all but one FDU serve resulted in a Blackbird point for a 92 percent sideout mark.

With the sweep, Long Island stretched its conference games won streak to a spotless 18. The Blackbirds have yet to lose a single game in six NEC matches.

Long Island hit .379 for the match, while the Knights hit -.083. The Blackbirds also held the edge in kills, 45-17.

LIU returns to action on Monday, Nov. 6 when Sacred Heart visits the Wellness Center at 6:00 p.m.
