9/6/06 -- After
dropping three straight matches to nationally-ranked teams
over the weekend, the Long Island University volleyball team
(3-4) returned home and cruised to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-14, 30-18)
victory over NJIT on Wednesday evening in its first game at
the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.
Junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) led three Blackbirds
in double-figure kills with 23 and hit .487 for the match. As
a team, LIU outhit the Highlanders .367 to .056.
Playing in its first game since
the new building opened in January, Long Island got off to
a bit of a slow start
as the Highlanders
won the match’s first three points. The Blackbirds would
respond, though, and with the game knotted at 15-15 they reeled
off five consecutive points to take control and go on to a 30-25
win.
Games two and three saw LIU use
an effective service game to roll to the straight-set win.
Junior Toni Perhat
(Roviny, Croatia)
tallied five of the Blackbirds’ eight aces and won 14 points
with her left-handed serve.
Classmate Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) added 13 kills while
freshman Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia) notched her third double-double
of the season (11 kills, 11 digs).
Kasha Hornstein had 10 kills for NJIT, who dropped to 2-4 on
the season.
LIU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 8 at the Harvard Invitational
in Boston, Mass. as they take on Rutgers at 4:00 p.m.
