9/2/06 – Junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) continued her strong early-season play with 13 kills but could not overcome a strong Pepperdine defense as the Long Island University volleyball team dropped its second consecutive match, 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-26), at the Asics Pepperdine Classic in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Lindsey Patty (Edmond, Okla.) finished with 25 assists for LIU while sophomore Jasmine Perez (Kingwood, Texas) contributed 12 digs.

Three Pepperdine players recorded multiple blocks in the first game as the Waves dominated play and rolled to a 30-17 win. Sophia Milo recorded four block assists to go along with four kills on five attempts for Pepperdine. Wagner finished the first period with five kills.

After falling in the second game by the identical score, the Blackbirds came out strong in the third period. Three straight kills by Toni Perhat, Wagner and Shelby Heggie gave LIU a quick 3-0 lead. But the Waves defense shut the Blackbirds down, totaling 16 block assists and one block solo for the match as they went on to the sweep.

Kiah Fiers led Pepperdine with 24 assists and 10 digs. Milo closed with 10 kills on .643 hitting and a game-high six block assists.

Long Island finishes play at the Pepperdine Invitational later tonight at 8:00 p.m. against No. 8 Texas.
