10/27/06 -- The Long Island University volleyball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 (30-20, 19-30, 30-22, 30-23) loss at Pittsburgh. Three Blackbirds tallied double figures in kills, with junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) leading the way with 12. Wagner added 12 digs for her 16th double-double of the season.

Junior Jasmine Perez (Kingwood, Texas) turned in a game-high 18 digs in the loss. Classmate Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) had 11 kills, while sophomore Martina Racic (Pula, Croatia) added 10.

Long Island (17-10) kept the first game close, but Pitt used a 7-1 run to take a 20-15 lead and held off a late LIU charge to win 30-20. The Blackbirds took game two by a 30-19 margin after using a 12-4 run to pull away from the Panthers.

The game two win would be the highlight of the match for Long Island as Pitt (18-7) took game three by a 30-22 margin. In the fourth game, the Blackbirds held a 16-11 lead but the Panthers score six of the next seven points to tie the game. Pitt would eventually build a four-point lead before scoring the five straight points to close out the match.

Pittsburgh’s Stephanie Ross led all players with 18 kills and teammate Michelle Rossi contributed 16 digs. Long Island hit .082 for the match, while the Panthers hit .166 and held a 55-47 edge in kills.

The Blackbirds will visit Robert Morris for a Northeast Conference game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
