9/23/06 --The Long Island University volleyball team opened the second day of play at the Courtyard by Marriot LaGuardia Blackbird Invitational with an impressive 3-0 (30-9, 30-15, 30-14) win over St. Francis (N.Y.). The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Blackbirds and extended the Terriers’ losing streak to 52 games.

Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) was the lone player to register double figures in kills with 10. The junior added four assists and three aces. Freshman Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia) led all players 12 digs to go along with her eight kills.

The Blackbirds (7-8) made easy work of St. Francis, taking the first game by a 30-9 margin. Games two and three had similar feels, as Long Island used an overall team effort to mow down the Terriers by scores of 30-15 and 30-14.

LIU outhit St. Francis, 49-12. The Blackbirds hit .365 for the match, compared to the Terriers’ -.090. St. Francis dropped to 0-11 on the season.

Long Island will wrap up play at the Blackbird Invitational later today when the Blackbirds host Cornell. The first serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
