junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) was named
to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Volleyball Team,
College Sports Information Directors of America officials announced
Thursday. Wagner, a marketing major, carries a 3.72 grade point
average.
Since Wagner was named to the first team, she will be placed
on the national ballot. CoSIDA members will begin voting for
the Academic All-America Volleyball Team on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
Wagner, First Team All-Northeast Conference selection last season,
has been honored by the conference with four NEC Player of the
Week awards this season, giving her six such awards for her career.
The outside hitter from Friedrichshafen, Germany is ranked second
in the nation in service aces per game, averaging 0.87. She is
also ranked 12th in the country in kills per game, with 5.08.
As a team, Long Island (20-10, 7-0 NEC) lead the nation in aces
per game, averaging 2.68.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete
must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better and must have completed
her freshman year.
The Blackbirds will host Albany at 5:00 p.m. tonight and will
wrap up their regular season with a pair of home games on Saturday,
Nov. 11. LIU will take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 11:00 a.m. before
hosting Syracuse at 2:00 p.m.
