10/21/06 -- The Long Island University volleyball team swept its fifth straight match with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-18, 30-11) win over Northeast Conference opponent Wagner on Saturday at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. Juniors Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) each registered double figures in kills as the Blackbirds improved to 16-9 (4-0 NEC).

Wagner led all players with 21 kills and added eight digs and a pair of aces. Heggie tallied 11 kills to go along with five digs. Freshman Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia) had a game-high 19 digs.

In the first game, the Seahawks took a 6-3 lead before the Blackbirds rattled off 10 straight points to take a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 30-18 win. Heggie registered seven of her 11 kills in the first frame. In the second stanza, Long Island used an 8-2 run late in the game to pull away to another 30-18 win.

Game three was much of the same, as LIU benefited from another big run, this time with junior Jasmine Perez (Kingwood, Texas) serving 10 straight times. The run gave the Blackbirds a 16-7 lead. Long Island scored 14 of the next 18 points to take the game by a score of 30-11.

Trish Morris led the Seahawks with eight kills as Wagner dropped to 5-17 (0-2). The Blackbirds outhit the Seahawks by a 49-19 margin. As a team, LIU hit .385, while Wagner hit -.021.

The Blackbirds will return to the court later today when they host Maine at 3:00 p.m.
