8/26/06 --The Long Island University women’s volleyball team (2-1) wrapped up play at the Jasper Invitational with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-25) sweep of host Mahattan to give the Blackbirds a second place finish in the tournament. Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and Shelby Heggie (Laramie, Wyo.) were rewarded for their play with spots on the all-tournament team.

After opening the tournament with a loss to Stony Brook and a win over Rhode Island, Long Island continued to build momentum after last night’s win against the Rams. The Blackbirds took game one 30-21 by outhitting the Jaspers, 16-9. LIU came right back in the second stanza, handing Manhattan a seven-point loss to put them down two games to none.

Game three saw the Blackbirds outhit their opponents by a 14-11 margin and committed only four errors on their way to securing their second victory of the season. Wagner led LIU with 18 kills and also contributed 11 digs. Svetlana Simic (Klerk, Serbia) led her team with 14 digs.

The Blackbirds will return to action on Friday, Sept. 1, when they take on Cal Poly at the Pepperdine Invitational.
