8/25/06 --The Long Island University women’s volleyball team (1-1) opened the season with a split on the first day of competition at the Jasper Invitational. In the nightcap, the Blackbirds defeated Rhode Island 3-1 (31-33, 30-26, 30-17, 30-23). LIU was led by Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and Svetlana Simic (Klerk, Serbia), who each registered double-doubles in both games. Against the Rams, Wagner notched 20 kills to go along with 20 digs while Simic had 12 kills and 28 digs.

After allowing the Rams to come from behind to take the first game of the match, the Blackbirds got off to a quick start in game two. LIU allowed the Rams to creep back within two points at 21-19, but answered back with five straight points to build a seven-point cushion. The Blackbirds would hold on to take the second game by a score of 30-26.
