8/25/06 --The
Long Island University women’s volleyball team (1-1)
opened the season with a split on the first day of competition
at the Jasper Invitational. In the nightcap, the Blackbirds
defeated Rhode Island 3-1 (31-33, 30-26, 30-17, 30-23). LIU
was led by Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen, Germany) and
Svetlana Simic (Klerk, Serbia), who each registered double-doubles
in both games. Against the Rams, Wagner notched 20 kills
to
go along with 20 digs while Simic had 12 kills and 28 digs.
After allowing the Rams to come from behind to take the first
game of the match, the Blackbirds got off to a quick start in
game two. They opened up with an 8-2 run to put Rhode Island
in an early hole. LIU allowed the Rams to creep back within two
points at 21-19, but answered back with five straight points
to build a seven-point cushion. The Blackbirds would hold on
to take the second game by a score of 30-26.
Long Island took a page out of its second-game playbook and
opened the third stanza by scoring nine of the first 10 points,
eventually making Rhode Island look up at a 13-point deficit
at 19-6. The Blackbirds controlled the game and eventually closed
out the Rams by a decisive 30-17 margin.
Game four had a different look to it, as the two teams seesawed
their way to an early 8-8 tie. Long Island stretched out to a
17-12 lead, but allowed the Rams to fight their way back within
two points before rebuilding the margin to 27-21 on their way
to securing the win.
Trevon Dyson led LIU with a .333 hitting percentage, while Ivy
Zuidhof matched that for the Rams, who were outhit as a team
59-54.
Earlier in the day, LIU dropped its season-opening match, falling
3-2 (30-21, 26-30, 30-22, 23-30, 10-15) to Stony Brook at the
Jasper Invitational. The Blackbirds were led by a pair of double-doubles,
coming from Wagner and Simic. Wagner racked up 23 kills and 13
digs, while Simic tallied 12 kills and 12 digs.
Long Island took the first game convincingly, but in the second
frame the Seawolves kept it close the whole way, eventually winning
the game by four points. Game three was similar until the Blackbirds
tied it at 20 before unleashing a 10-2 run to close out the game.
The fourth game was also tight, but saw Stony Brook pull away
at the end to force the deciding fifth game. The two teams battled
back-and-forth to tie the game at nine, but the Seawolves outscored
the Blackbirds 6-1 at the end to take the match.
Simic lead LIU with a .229 hitting percentage,
while Kaitlyn Deutsch’s .333 average paced Stony Brook.
The Blackbirds were outhit by the Seawolves, 69-52.
LIU returns to action at the Jasper Invitational tomorrow against
host Manhattan at 4:00 p.m.
