After an MVP performance at the Blackbird Holiday Inn Express
Challenge over the weekend, junior Martina Wagner (Friedrichshafen,
Germany) was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week,
as announced by the league on Monday.
Wagner averaged 5.0 kills and
4.20 digs per game as she helped lead the Blackbirds to a 3-0
record and a tournament championship. The award is the second
individual honor Wagner has earned this season, and the third
time an LIU player has been named Player of the Week.
On Friday, the outside hitter
opened play with 18 kills, 17 digs, two aces and one assist
in a 3-1
win
over Virginia Commonwealth.
Then on Saturday, Wagner posted
14 kills, 13 digs, four aces, two blocks and a .407 hitting
percentage in a sweep of Sacred Heart, and 18 kills, 12 digs,
one ace, one assist and a .400 hitting percentage in a 3-0
victory over South Dakota State.
On the season, Wagner leads the
NEC in kills (4.86 kpg), service aces (0.58 sapg) and points
(5.75 ppg), while also ranking seventh in digs (3.43 dpg).
The Blackbirds will try to extend
their five-game winning streak as they entertain Seton Hall
on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
