3/6/07 -- The Long Island University women's volleyball team took time out of their schedule to give back to the community on Friday, March 2. The three-time Northeast Conference championship squad spent three hours at Public School #261 in Brooklyn teaching third-, fourth- and fifth-graders the fundamentals of volleyball.

"Teaching the junior high kids about volleyball and the value of working hard and staying in school proved to be a lot of fun," head coach Toby Rens said about the experience.

Players taught the kids volleyball fundamentals such as serving and passing as well as important lessons on teamwork, sportsmanship and enjoying the game. After the clinic, the players signed autographs for the students and posed for photos.

"It proved to be a win-win situation," Rens added. "Our student-athletes taught them a lot about volleyball and the kids were very supportive and attentive to what we were telling them. The students were very energetic and it made it a lot of fun to teach them."

LIU finished the 2006 season with a 25-11 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. The Blackbirds will return nine letterwinners for next season.
