9/13/04 -- Sophomore Dana Demayo (Ra’anana, Israel), who been a major factor for Long Island both at the net and on defense the last two years, today was named Northeast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the first time.

The reigning NEC Rookie of the Year, Demayo made the Connecticut Invitational All-Tournament team last week with 42 kills, 69 digs, eight assists, five aces, a block solo and a block assist to help the Blackbirds go 2-1.

Demayo opened the tournament Friday with 17 kills against Stony Brook in a 3-1 victory and later in the day notched a career-best 31 digs, one shy of the school record, against Connecticut in a 3-0 loss.

She closed with 10 kills and 20 digs in the finale Saturday against Holy Cross in a 3-0 win, earning her second trip on an all-tournament team this year. Demayo made the all-tournament squad September 4 at the Sacred Heart Invitational.

Demayo this season is tied for the team lead with 101 kills and paces the Blackbirds (6-2) with 139 digs. She is rapidly approaching the school’s career top 10 list in both categories.

LIU returns to action Friday against North Carolina State at the Coastal Carolina Classic in Conway, S.C.
