11/7/04 --
Senior Ivana Vasiljevic (Brcko, Bosnia & Herzegovina) broke the school’s
digs record in her final home match for Long Island, which set the mark for most
single-season home victories in a 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-18) Northeast Conference
triumph over Sacred Heart at Schwartz Center.
Vasiljevic ended with nine digs and has 1,282
career, breaking the mark previously held by Loressa Berona
(1999-2002) with 1,275.
The two-time All-NEC selection also closed today with 42 assists,
raising her school-record total to an astounding 4,233.
The victory also gives LIU (27-6, 5-1 NEC) a
10-0 home record, breaking the school mark for most wins at
Schwartz Center set
in 2000, and an unprecedented perfect mark here. The win enabled
the Blackbirds to clinch a trip to the NEC Tournament for the
third straight season.
Senior Cristina Pintilie (Cluj Napoca, Romania), also playing
in her last home match, could not be stopped in game one with
seven kills over eight errorless attacks. LIU pounded 24 kills
in that game with a .556 hitting percentage vs. 16 and .375 for
Sacred Heart (5-18, 3-2).
Pintilie ended the match with 14 kills and just two errors for
a .545 percentage, helping the Blackbirds to their third six-match
winning streak of the year. That aided LIU posting a 59-33 kills
edge with a .339 percentage.
Sophomore Dana Demayo (Ra’anana,
Israel) closed with 12 kills and 12 digs, marking her 22nd
double-double
this season
and 34th career. Junior Lizelle Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) ended
with 12 kills, 11 digs and a .407 percentage for her 12th double-double
this year.
Samantha McMillan dished 20 assists and Michelle
Clarke had 11 for the Pioneers.
LIU closes the regular season on a three-match road trip, beginning
Saturday at Central Connecticut State. First serve is at 1:00
