9/3/04 -- Sophomore Dana Demayo (Ra'anana, Israel) just missed career high with 17 kills and 21 digs, leading Long Island to a 3-1 victory (30-13, 30-20, 28-30, 30-26) over Sacred Heart in the opener of the SHU Tournament in Fairfield, Conn.

Demayo, the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, was on a tear in pacing the Blackbirds to their first 3-0 start in school history. She almost eclipsed her own personal bests of 21 kills against Central Connecticut State on November 22, 2003 and 23 digs against Hofstra and Fairleigh Dickinson a season ago.

Senior and defending NEC Player of the Year Cristina Pintilie (Cluj Napoca, Romania) ended with 16 kills and junior Melanie Fleig (Villingen, Germany) pounded 12 for LIU, which ended with 63 kills and a .296 hitting percentage.

Stacey Geyer led the Pioneers (0-1) with 11 kills with Michelle Clarke adding 36 assists.

LIU continues play in the SHU Tournament on Saturday against Rider and Fordham.
