Dana Demayo (Ra'anana, Israel) and junior Melanie Fleig (Villingen,
Germany) each recorded a double-double as Long Island extended
its winning streak to six, 3-1 (31-33, 30-27, 30-27, 30-20) at
Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J.
Demayo fought through illness to close with 13 kills and 17
digs for her 12th double-double of the season and 24th career.
Fleig, the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week,
ended with 13 and 13 for her fourth double-double this year.
Senior Cristina Pintilie (Cluj Napoca, Romania) had another
strong outing with 18 kills, a .400 hitting percentage, four
block solos and six block assists. Senior Ivana Vasiljevic (Brcko,
Bosnia & Herzegovina) dished 45 assists and freshman Jasmine
Perez (Kingwood, Texas) continued her solid defensive play with
a season-best 16 digs.
Trailing 29-21 in game one, LIU (15-4) fought
off 10 game points to get to 31-31 before a pair of hitting
errors ended it.
The Blackbirds pounded 15 kills in game two and forced the Peahens
(1-12) into 12 errors in game three to take control of the match.
LIU posted nine kills in game four and closed it on
a 13-3 run to move one victory shy of equaling the school's longest
winning streak from two seasons ago.
Valeria Kovaleva notched a triple-double with
19 kills, 28 assists and 16 digs for Saint Peter's. Gukhan
Cakcak pounded 17
kills with Tara Teslaa contributing 10 and 18 digs.
LIU returns to action Friday at the Valley National Bank Knights
Classic in Hackensack, N.J. against Fairfield, beginning at 6:00
