11/7/06 -- Five players scored in double figures as the Long Island University women’s basketball team defeated the New York Gazelles, 82-71, in an exhibition game at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center on Tuesday night. Senior Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) and freshman Valerie Nainima (Suva, Fiji) each netted a game-high 16 points in the win.

Nainima scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half as the two teams battled back and forth. The Blackbirds trailed 32-20 when senior Masa Susic (Zenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina) came off the bench to ignite the offense with back-to-back three-pointers. Susic then assisted on an Oblak layup to cut the deficit to four.

After a Nainima bucket and another Oblak layup put Long Island ahead, the Gazelles scored four straight points to retake the lead. Susic struck again with her third trifecta to put the Blackbirds back on top. The first half see-sawed on, but another Susic trey with four seconds left on the clock gave LIU a two-point edge heading into the half.

Susic finished with 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting. All of her shots came from beyond the three-point arc.

The Blackbirds would hold on to the lead for the duration of a foul-plagued second half. The Gazelles committed 17 second-half fouls, dwarfing the two they were whistled for in the first. Junior Mikaelar Whippy (Suva, Fiji) scored eight of her 10 points in the second stanza.

Long Island held the edge in rebounding by a 42-36 margin. Oblak pulled in a game-high nine rebounds. Lynetta Sullivan’s seven rebounds led the Gazelles. Allison Thorne had 13 points and Nastassia Boucilault chipped in 11 in a losing effort for New York.

The Blackbirds will open the 2006-07 season on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host Saint Peter’s at 7:00 p.m.
