9/03/05 --Junior Selima Berisha (Belluvue, Wash.) blasted the game-winner in the 84th minute to push Long Island University past Drexel University, 1-0 in college women’s soccer action at LIU Field on Saturday afternoon. The contest was the home opener for the Blackbirds (2-1).

Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) sent a cross from the right side to a waiting Berisha on the left side of the box for the deciding score. The goal was Berisha’s first of the season.

The Blackbirds had numerous chances to score, recording eight shots on goal in the second half. Prior to scoring, LIU’s best opportunity came in the 56th minute. Berisha, fast approaching from the right side, saw her attempt blocked by Drexel goalkeeper Erica Lippitt. The ball bounced left and to the foot of teammate Caley Troutman (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Troutman’s shot was cleared by a Drexel defender to keep the game scoreless.

LIU outshot the Dragons, 16-4, including a 10-3 advantage in the second stanza. Lippett and Kaitlin Bond split time between the pipes for the Dragons, teaming up for nine saves. Dragon defenders posted two saves.

The Blackbirds return to action on Tuesday, September 6, as they host Stony Brook at 7:30 p.m. The men’s game with Manhattan College will precede the contest, beginning at 5:00 as part of a doubleheader.
