9/25/05 -- Junior Selima Berisha (Belluvue, Wash.) scored two goals as Long Island held on for a 2-1 victory over Iona College in college women’s soccer action at LIU Field.

The first score came in the 14th minute, when senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) found twin sister Meghann McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) on the right side. McCormick crossed the ball to an open Berisha in front of the net. On the fly, she beat a sprawling Iona keeper Jessica Martin to put the Blackbirds on the board.

A perfect cross by junior Allison Andreano (Denville, N.J.) set up Berisha’s second goal of the match. In heavy traffic, Berisha converted a header in the box at the 28:17 mark, and gave LIU a 2-0 lead.

Iona came on strong in the second half. A goal by sophomore Christina Rizzi in the 62nd minute cut the Long Island lead to one. The Blackbirds (5-4) were able to squash the rally, snapping the Gaels’ five-game winning streak and improving their home record to a perfect 4-0.

Junior Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) recorded two saves in the second half for the Blackbirds who won their second consecutive match.

LIU begins Northeast Conference play on Friday, Sept. 30 at preseason favorite Central Connecticut State at 3:00 p.m.
