12/14/05 -- Long Island University women’s soccer player Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) was chosen as a Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete award winner by the Northeast Conference.

A first team all-NEC selection each of the last two years and a second team pick as a sophomore, McCormick ended her career as the Blackbirds' all-time leader in assists (15) and ranks second in goals (20) and points (55). She helped lead Long Island to the conference finals this past season following a second place regular season finish. A member of LIU's Honor's Program, she is an English major with a 3.61 grade point average.

During NEC-televised basketball games, a different student-athlete will be chosen from each participating school as a Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete. At the conclusion of the basketball season, a donation in honor of each institution’s award winners and on behalf of Valley National Bank will be presented to every NEC school for use in their general scholarship funds.

In addition, Valley is sponsoring the "Valley National Bank Academic Awards" program, which includes the Valley National Bank Student-Athlete of the Year, the Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards (presented to one winner in each of the conference’s 21 sports) and the Valley National Bank NEC Honor Roll (comprised of student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade point average of 3.2 or higher).
