10/7/05 -- Senior Meghann McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered a goal and an assist to lift Long Island University to a 2-1 win over Robert Morris in Northeast Conference women’s soccer action Friday night at soggy LIU Field. The Blackbirds improved to 7-5-0, 2-1 in NEC action, while the Colonials fell to 2-7-2, 0-2-1 ACC.

Freshman Christina O’Connor (Venetia, Pa.) netted her first career goal- the game-winner- in the 62nd minute to push the Blackbirds to a 5-0 mark at home this season.

The Colonials notched the game’s first score on what looked to be a cross downfield. With LIU goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) playing 10 yards in front of the net, Angela Story sent the ball 40 yards and into the back of the net.

LIU closed even ten minutes later on McCormick’s third goal of the fall. Senior forward Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) delivered the assist, passing to her twin sister on the left side. McCormick rolled the ball into the far corner of the net to knot the game at 1-1.

The Blackbirds went ahead to stay in the 62nd minute. A corner kick from the left side from M. McCormick was punched out by keeper Jessica Onufer. McCormick settled the ball on the release and fired into the box and off the head of O’Connor for the deciding score.

The Blackbirds launched 19 shots in comparison to the Colonials’ five. Kansky shared time in goal with sophomore Felicia Amaral, who recorded three saves. Robert Morris keeper Elizabeth Moss recorded four stops in the first half and Onufer had one in the second stanza.

LIU, celebrating alumni weekend, returns to action on Sunday, October 9, hosting St. Francis (PA) at 1:00 p.m.
