9/6/05 -- Junior Selima Berisha (Belluvue, Wash.) scored with 14 seconds remaining to lift Long Island University to a 1-0 triumph over Stony Brook University in college women’s soccer action at LIU Field.

The Blackbirds, in their ninth season of collegiate play, are off to their best start in program history (3-1). The Seawolves fall to 0-3-1 on the season.

Classmate Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) delivered the pass, finding a speedy Berisha on the left side. She rolled the ball past goalkeeper Cindy Bennett into the right corner for the thrilling win.

It was a tale of two halves offensively, as each team controlled a separate stanza. The Blackbirds had several opportunities in the first half, out-shooting the Seawolves, 5-0.

Stony Brook midfielders Danielle Lewis and Brittany Benthin had good looks at the goal in the 57th and 63rd minute, respectively, only to be turned away by LIU keeper Felicia Amaral (Southbridge, Mass.). The Blackbirds defense once again proved solid, accounting for three team saves.

The Blackbirds return to action on Sunday, September 11, traveling to Northeastern.
