10/15/06 -- Long Island University saw its 23 match unbeaten streak snapped, dropping a 1-0 decision to Central Connecticut State in Northeast Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday at LIU Field. The streak enters the NCAA record book as the 12th best in all-time women’s soccer history.

The game marked the first league loss of the season for the Blackbirds (7-7-1, 4-1 NEC) while Central moves to 6-8-1, 3-2-1 in conference play.

Freshman Ciara Crinion earned a free kick in the 20th minute for the Blue Devils and converted for the game’s lone goal. From straightaway and 40 yards out, her strike trickled past the LIU defense and goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) and into the corner of the box.

The Blackbirds had a number of opportunities with its best effort coming at the 11:05 mark of the first half. Senior Christine Gans (Pittsburgh, Pa.) saw her blast hit the crossbar.

With a corner kick in the final 15 seconds of play, LIU had a pair of last second shots stopped by Blue Devils goalkeeper Caity Casey.

The Blackbirds had a 15-10 shot advantage, earning five shots on goal. LIU travels to western Pennsylvania next weekend for a pair of conference contests. They face Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 20 at 3:00 and battle St. Francis (PA) on Sunday, Oct. 22.
