forward Selima Berisha (Belluvue, Wash.) registered three goals
and classmate Allison Andreano (Denville, N.J.) became the all-time
assist leader as Long Island University cruised to an 8-0 win
over Delaware State in women’s soccer action at LIU Field.
Freshman forward Aly Hanson (New Milford, N.J.) notched two
goals and senior Christine Gans (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a pair
of assists as the Blackbirds moved to 2-3 on the season. With
the triumph, LIU is now 18-0-1 in its last 19 games at home.
The Blackbirds scored their first score in the 11th minute when
Berisha slipped a rebound shot past Hornets goalkeeper Tara McQueen.
Andreano assisted on the play, raising her career total to 16-
a new LIU record.
Thirteen minutes later, Berisha
scored unassisted from the right side to push the advantage
to 2-0. Senior Tiffany
Dunbar (Naperville,
Ill.) delivered her first career score and the game’s third
goal in the 32nd minute off a flick thru from freshman Neddie
King (Williamsville, N.Y.).
Andreano worked her way through
traffic in the 55th minute to move LIU to a 4-0 lead. Hanson
netted the game’s
next two scores, both off feeds from Gans in a five-minute
span.
Junior Caley Troutman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Berisha concluded
the scoring with goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes, respectively.
The Blackbirds launched 21 shots
in comparison to the Hornets’ five.
Senior Stephanie Kansky shared time in goal with junior Felicia
Amaral and freshman Angela Schmacher. Kansky and Amaral each
recorded a stop.
LIU returns to action on Sunday, September 10, facing Stanford
at 12:00. The game is being played at Rutgers University.
