10/31/04 -- Junior
Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored twice to lift
Long Island to a 2-1 win over
Central Connecticut State in Northeast Conference women’s
soccer action at LIU Field.
The Blackbirds improve to 8-6-2, 4-3-2 in league play and the
Blue Devils drop to 10-9, 6-3.
CCSU got on the board first.
Midfielder Kelly Shimmin shot the ball ahead to Jess McCavanaugh
in the 19th
minute. McCavanaugh
broke away from the defense, forcing keeper Stephanie Kansky
(Bellevue, Wash.) out of the box, lofting the ball into the net
for a 1-0 lead. The goal was McCavanaugh’s 10th of the
season.
Nine minutes later, the Blackbirds scored the equalizer when
Selima Berisha (Bellevue, Wash.) fed McCormick on the right side.
She booted it past a diving Ashley Ferra to tie the contest at
1-1. LIU held a 9-1 edge in shots at the half.
CCSU had its best opportunity to retake the lead in the second
half when Kelly Shimmin took a free kick that deflected off the
cross bar.
The Blackbirds put offensive pressure on the Blue Devils defense
in the second half. Freshman Caley Troutman (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
started the rush, firing a shot from the top of the box. Netminder
Ashley Ferra made the first stop but could not grab the rebound.
The bounce found the foot of McCormick who booted the game-winner
in from three yards out. The Blackbirds played solid defense
the rest of the way to hold on for the victory.
Kansky registered her sixth win of the season, making four saves.
Ferra recorded nine saves in the loss.
It was the final collegiate game for seniors Nichole Lopez (Highland
Mills, N.Y.), Tina Prickett (Eldora, N.J.), Alison Dixon (Syracuse,
N.Y.) and Tiffany Clendenning (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.).
