9/26/04 -- Sophomore forward Selima Berisha (Bellevue, Wash.) scored in the 62nd minute to lift Long Island University to a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in Northeast Conference women’s soccer action at LIU Field. The Blackbirds improve to 5-3, 2-0 while the Mountaineers fall to 2-7, 0-2 on the season.

After assisting on the game-winner in Friday night’s win over Monmouth, Tiffany Clendenning (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) once again began the chain of events. The senior defender sent a touch pass at the top left side of the box to Berisha, who booted it inside the left post from 15 yards out.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) faced three shots, making one save to preserve the shutout for the Blackbirds. Junior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) and sophomore Allison Andreano (Denville, N.J.) recorded four shots each for LIU.

The Blackbirds put the pressure on early in the game forcing Mountaineer defenders to make two team saves in the first 10 minutes. In the 39th minute, Andreano provided LIU with the best scoring chance of the first half, but goalkeeper Margaret Pyzik knocked the shot off the top post. LIU held an 18-3 shot advantage and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Blackbirds return to action on Friday, October 1, traveling to Sacred Heart for a 3:30 pm contest.
