8/26/05 -- Senior forward Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) lifted Long Island University to a 1-0 double overtime win over Rider University on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Catie Blake (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) lifted the ball downfield from just inside the midfield line. McCormick, the team’s leading scorer a season ago, found the right corner from 20 yards out.

The Blackbirds posted a 15-9 shot advantage, including an 11-3 difference in the second half and overtime periods.

LIU had several opportunities in the second half, peppering Rider goalkeeper Kim Carter with offensive pressure. In the 86th minute, LIU midfielder Christine Gans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) blasted a direct shot on goal. Carter blocked that shot and the subsequent attempt on goal by LIU forward Selima Berisha (Bellevue, Wash/Newport).

Sophomore Felica Amaral (Oxford, Mass./Oxford) registered her third career win, making three saves. Carter made eight stops.

The contest marked the third straight season the teams played an overtime contest. LIU, which received votes in the preseason Soccer Buzz Northeast Region rankings, next travels to Binghamton for a 1:00 p.m. Sunday start.
