8/28/04 -- Junior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored in the 47th minute as Long Island won its season opener, 1-0 over Utah Valley in Las Vegas, Nev.

McCormick, who last season paced the Blackbirds with 18 points, took a pass from sophomore Allison Andreano (Denville, N.J.) and skipped a shot from 10 yards past goalkeeper Amberlee Nelson.

It was McCormick's ninth career goal, helping LIU to its first victory in a season opener since a 1-0 triumph against Lafayette on September 2, 1998.

Sophomore Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.), last year's top freshman goalie in the Northeast Region according to Soccer Buzz Magazine, made it stand with six saves for her 10th career win.

Carolyn Theurer fired six shots and Nelson made three saves for the Wolverines (0-1-1).

LIU will face UNLV on Monday, beginning at 10:00 Eastern Time (7:00 Pacific Time).
