9/3/04 -- Junior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool,
N.Y.) booted in the
game-winning
goal in the 92nd minute to give the Long Island University
women’s
soccer a team a 3-2 overtime victory over Rider. The Blackbirds
improve to 2-1 while the Broncs fall to 1-1 on the young season.
The teams amounted for little offense until the closing minute
of the first half when senior Nichole Lopez
(Highland Mills, N.Y.), streaking down the left side, fed a darting McCormick
who scored from five yards out for the first score of the game.
The Blackbirds added insurance in the 49th minute from the foot
of midfielder Christine Gans (Pittsburgh,
Pa.). The Broncs defense,
hoping to get an offsides trap were stifled when Lopez from midfield
delivered a perfect pass to Gans. One-on-one with RU goalkeeper
Kim Carter, Gans struck from three yards out to push LIU to a
2-0 lead.
The Broncs responded 11 minutes later, netting
their first goal of the game on Tami Cole’s header. They
knotted the score at 2-2 in the 75th minute when Marianne Hanna
found the inside
top right corner.
LIU sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie
Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) posted some amazing saves in the second half, including a diving
stop in the 82nd minute off a liner from Andrea Giuliani.
The game-winner came a little over a minute into the extra stanza
when midfielder Allison Andreano (Denville,
N.J.) dribbled into
the box. Carter, attempting to stop Andreano, was beat by a streaking
McCormick who found the open net for the victory.
LIU, only in its seventh season of women’s
soccer, is off to its best start (2-1) since the 1998 campaign.
The Blackbirds
host Temple on Wednesday, September 8 at 5:00 pm.
