4/12/06 -- Long Island University saw its four-match winning snapped in women’s tennis on Tuesday evening as Southern Mississippi topped the Blackbirds, 7-0, at the National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.

Seniors Jessica Loose (Scheessel, Germany) and Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) trailed 3-0 in their No. 1 doubles match but stormed back to win LIU’s only match of the night, 9-8 (7-4). Loose also won the first set of her top-flight singles match with Sherry Price but was unable to breakthrough in the second or third, suffering the defeat.

Southern Mississippi’s Ali Blackett won her No. 4 singles match over freshman Ashley Harvey (Randallstown, Md.), 6-1, 6-4. The loss ended Harvey’s 13-match winning streak in singles competition.

Harvey compiled a 4-2 overall mark last week to capture her first career Prince NEC Player of the Week award. In the No. 4 singles slot, Harvey tallied wins over conference foes FDU and Wagner, while also teaming with Merve Koksal to post doubles victories in those matches. Harvey is now 20-4 in singles action on the season.

The Blackbirds conclude their Northeast Conference regular-season schedule with a home date against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m.
