4/1/07 --
Senior Merve Koksal
(Ankara, Turkey) and sophomore Ashley Harvey (Randallstown,
Md.) each posted straight-set victories in singles
competition but the Long Island University tennis team ultimately fell
to Army, 5-2, in a dual match at West Point, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
Harvey defeated Sarah Giles-Madden at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3,
while
Koksal dropped Kristin Beehler at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
In what was a closely contested match throughout, the Cadets
were able to eek
out three pivotal wins at the No. 6 singles position as well
as in two doubles matches. After dropping the first set, 6-4,
sophomore Amy Hosotsuji (Toronto, Ontario) battled back to win
the second, 7-5, in the final singles position and was up a break
point in the third. Christine Limsiaco of Army was able to break
Hosotsuji's to force a match-deciding tiebreaker and went on
to win that tiebreak, 7-5.
Sophomore Liliana Cortes (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Koksal teamed
up at
the top doubles position and led the Army team by three, 7-4.
But the Cadets rattled off five straight games to take the match,
9-7. Hosotsuji and Harvey also led No. 3 doubles, 7-6, but saw
their lead slip away as Army again pushed ahead for a 9-7 win.
The Blackbirds look to snap their five-game losing streak as
they face Colgate on Sunday, April 1 at 10:00 a.m.
