The Long Island University tennis team traveled to Gulfport, Miss. this weekend
to compete in the Lady Eagle Classic, hosted by Southern Mississippi.
The Blackbirds fell to Troy State,
5-0, on Friday and dropped two more matches on Saturday and
Sunday to Southern Mississippi and West Virginia, respectively.
Against Troy State, senior Merve
Koksal had tied the second set of her match with Claudia Strauss
and had switched momentum, but was unable to finish due to
the Trojans winning four other singles matches and the doubles
point.
On Saturday, Koksal and sophomore
Ashley Harvey (Randallstown, Md.) saw their matches abruptly
halted due to Southern Mississippi winning the doubles point
and three
of
the singles matches. Harvey led 5-3 in the second set and Koksal
led 5-4 but were unable to secure either points.
In the final day of the competition,
Koksal paired with sophomore Liliana Cortes (Cochabamba, Bolivia)
to win LIU's first match of the weekend, a 9-8, tiebreak victory
at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Amy Hosotsjui (Toronto,
Ontario) nearly won the Blackbirds first singles match of the
trip, but lost a third-set tiebreak 10-5. Harvey also won a
set in her singles match, but was unable to win either of the
final two.
Long Island returns to the Northeast
for a non-conference match against Army on Saturday, March
31 at 3:00 p.m.
