7/5/05 -- Long Island University women’s tennis coach Wayne Martin has resigned after seven years at his post to pursue other opportunities in the private sector.

“We are very proud of the job Wayne did during his tenure at LIU,” said Director of Athletics John Suarez. “We wish him well in the future.”

Martin compiled a 100-48 record during that span, including a trip to the Northeast Conference final each of the last two seasons. The Blackbirds went 95-37 over his last six campaigns and a staggering 34-4 against the NEC in that span.

LIU also made its mark on the national scene as well under Martin’s leadership. The Blackbirds were ranked 68th when it first cracked the CollegeTennisOnline.com poll in 2002 and returned there with a No. 72 ranking in 2004.

A national search to replace Martin is underway.
