9/25/04 -- The
Long Island University women's tennis team registered its first
win of the fall season, 5-2 over Saint Joseph's on
Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Blackbirds rolled to victories in four singles matches
and captured the doubles point to secure the win. Merve
Koksal,
last year's Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, posted
a straight sets victory, 6-0, 6-2 over the Nicole Morriston
at No. 1 singles. In the second spot, senior Veronica
Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania) captured a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michelle
Savage.
Junior Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-0,
6-2 win at No. 3 singles and newcomer Claudia
Arteaga (Cali, Colombia) recorded a straight-sets triumph in the fifth position.
The tandems of Apostu-Efremov and Bachner, and Koksal and Ellen
Anolin (Flushing, N.Y.) won at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles
positions, respectively.
LIU is back in action Friday, October 8, taking on Akron
at Fordham in the Bronx.
