9/25/04 -- The Long Island University women's tennis team registered its first win of the fall season, 5-2 over Saint Joseph's on Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Blackbirds rolled to victories in four singles matches and captured the doubles point to secure the win. Merve Koksal, last year's Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, posted a straight sets victory, 6-0, 6-2 over the Nicole Morriston at No. 1 singles. In the second spot, senior Veronica Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania) captured a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michelle Savage.

Junior Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and newcomer Claudia Arteaga (Cali, Colombia) recorded a straight-sets triumph in the fifth position.

The tandems of Apostu-Efremov and Bachner, and Koksal and Ellen Anolin (Flushing, N.Y.) won at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, respectively.

LIU is back in action Friday, October 8, taking on Akron at Fordham in the Bronx.
