Job Title: Senior Assistant Director- Admissions
Department: Office of Admissions
Description:
This position has a primary focus on new student (first-time to college and transfer) recruitment and admissions counseling. It incorporates a full range of admissions responsibilities including establishing and strengthening a recruitment territory, representing the University to secondary school counselors, prospective students and family members, evaluating admissions applications, and contributing to the planning and implementation of admissions projects and activities. The Sr. Assistant Director is responsible for practicing good student service principles and embracing a wholistic student development strategic plan. This position requires an understanding of best practices in higher education and admissions.
Sr. Assistant Director will act as an advocate, adviser, and counselor. The candidate is required to understand educational systems including but not limited to secondary schools (U.S. based and international); community colleges; associate and baccalaureate degrees; and post-bac/post doc programs. The Sr. Assistant Director is responsible for having a sensitivity to adolescent and college-student development.
Additionally, the Sr. Assistant Director will work closely with the Director of Undergraduate Admissions to establish an environment that is student centered and focused on practices and policies that advance the Undergraduate Admissions area. The Senior Assistant will help supervise the staff but all supervisory responsibility lies with the Director of Undergraduate Admissions.
Responsibilities:
• The candidate will represent the Brooklyn Campus’ on-campus programs at fairs, open houses, and other interested individuals and other recruitment events; overnight and long-term travel will be required.
• Participate in developing and implementing strategic enrollment goals for freshmen and transfer student enrollment
• Present to small or large groups; conduct student interviews; provide information and guidance to prospective students and their families.
• Assist with various marketing activities, applicant file evaluation (including secondary school, GED, and college transcripts), and a variety of administrative activities, as assigned.
• Serve as a liaison between the Office of Admissions, Academic Program Coordinators, and the community.
• Maintain a high level of customer service through contacts with prospective and current students; act as student agent, adviser and advocate from pre-enrollment through students’ first-year at LIU.
• Analyze effectiveness of recruitment activities and report on these activities to the Director of UG Admissions and the Dean of Admission.
• Promote and maintain favorable relationships with guidance counselors and other influencers of the admissions process.
• Represent the Brooklyn Campus during on-campus programs, open houses and other recruitment events.
• Willingness to learn, adapt and engage in professional development to assist with personal enlightenment and in return contribute to a “best-practices” office.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s preferred. 3-5 years experience in college admissions, recruitment or marketing; familiarity and understanding for educational systems; student development and/or counseling experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong customer service skills and experience; understanding of the dynamic modes of communication with students and parents (i.e. use of technology and social networking vs. traditional use of email, phone campaigns and letter campaigns.). Ability to handle multiple assignments and responsibilities at the same time. Ability to adapt to a fast paced work environment and with diverse populations. Ability and willingness to travel, in some cases, overnight for long periods of time; requires valid driver’s license. Financial literacy related to college-bound student education. Sense of humor, creativity, team-oriented work ethic; ability to work autonomously and with direction; flexibility for work schedules that may include evenings and weekends.
