Reference

(718) 780-4513

The Reference Department is located on the third floor of the library and houses the Reference Desk, Secured Reference Collection, the paralegal research collection, and all theses and dissertations by LIU Brooklyn Campus graduate students.

The Reference Department is where you will find reference librarians to help you locate the print and electronic resources you will need to begin and, in most cases, complete your research.

Reference Librarians:

Reference librarians are on duty at the Reference Desk every hour that the Library is open. It is sound research strategy to consult with a reference librarian as you begin your research to gather the terminology and be directed to the most appropriate information resources available for your topic. You may chat with a librarian online using Live Reference Chat and IM A Librarian Meebo Instant Messaging Service (Pilot). You may call the Reference Desk at (718) 780-4513 for assistance, chat online, or e-mail a reference librarian with experience in your subject area by consulting this list of subject specialists.

The Reference Department coordinates library instruction and course-integrated instruction sessions. To make arrangements for such a session for your class, stop at the Reference Desk or fill in the Library Instruction Online Request Form. Please be aware, classes must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

Print resources:

Around the perimeter of the 3rd floor, you will find journal and newspaper print indexes in all the major subject areas. In this area, you will see the room housing the paralegal research collection. Traditional reference tools such as general and specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, biographies, etc., may be found in the Walter Rothschild Reference Library (Room LLC 308-1) on the 3rd floor. Also in this room, you will find information resources for business and industry research, career development, government documents, and literary criticism.

Computing resources:

Forty-six computers are available for searching electronic information resources:

  • Thirty-seven computers are dedicated to LIU's hundreds of online databases which offer access to citations, abstracts, and in many cases, full text articles, conference papers and other special works in all major subject areas.
  • Seven computers are dedicated to LIUCAT, the online book catalog and general purpose research. You may find citations to books available on all campuses in the LIU system.
  • Two computers are dedicated ADA workstations.
  • You may print from all computers for a fee of 10 cents per copy.
