Brooklyn, N.Y. - One of the pivotal events of this decade, the Iraq War continues to impinge on world consciousness and to cast a long political shadow on the future. Seeking to provide diverse viewpoints about this subject, four members of the political science department at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus have coauthored a book titled, "The Iraq Papers: Case Study of a Preemptive War."
Last month, the authors - experts in different fields of political science - received a contract from Oxford University Press, the prestigious academic publishers, to publish their book. The authors are John Ehrenberg, chair of the Campus's political science department and a specialist in political theory; J. Patrice McSherry, a comparative politics expert and founding chair of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program; Jose Sanchez, chair of the urban studies department and a specialist in American politics; and Caroleen Marij Sayej, an authority on international affairs and Middle Eastern studies.
Featuring a comprehensive selection of primary documents, "the book also supplies context and analysis to give a fuller picture of the scope and consequences of 'preemption' both abroad and at home," said McSherry.
"The Iraq Papers" draws on a course about the Iraq war the professors team-taught last year at the Brooklyn Campus, and offers a variety of viewpoints. For example, said professor Sayej, "I worked to incorporate Iraqi perspectives on the war, state building and democracy."
Added McSherry, "We sought to promote citizen understanding so that such wars would never happen again without full democratic discussion and supervision."
The book's publication is scheduled for late 2009. For more information, call professor Patrice McSherry at (718) 780-4105.
