Brooklyn, N.Y. – “The Streets of Brooklyn in Film” is the focus of a free conference to be held at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. On Saturday, May 30, 2009, excerpts from more than two dozen classic and lesser-known movies – including “On the Waterfront,” “The French Connection” and “The Lords of Flatbush” – will set the stage for discussions that explore Hollywood's depiction of Brooklyn street culture and Brooklyn archetypes.

Co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Campus Media Arts Department and the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival, “The Streets of Brooklyn in Film” conference takes place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, in the Brooklyn Campus Spike Lee Screening Room, room 122, in the Library Learning Center. The event is free and open to the public. For program information, please call the Media Arts Department at (718) 488-1052.

“The Streets of Brooklyn in Film” program has been conceived and curated by Aziz Rahman, director of the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival. Scheduled speakers include Long Island University professors Larry Banks, Joseph Dorinson and Michael Hittman and New York University associate professor Ed Guerrero. The program's guest speaker is author Sol Yurick, whose 1965 crime novel, “The Warriors,” was the basis for the cult movie classic of the same name.

This program was made possible by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.
